My thoughts and prayers go to the victims of today’s senseless tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.
When… and how… does this sort of violence end?

If only I could answer your question. If only any of us could. Today is also the 19th anniversary of a shooting at Chuck E Cheese in Aurora, Colorado. It happened my senior year in high school down the street from my school, by a shooter who graduated from my school. My heart just aches. All over.

I arrived at the University of Texas to attend grad school and to work in the rare book library in August of 1966, the day after Charles Whitman climbed up to the top of the library tower and used a high-powered rifle to kill 14 people who were walking around the quad below him. Almost turned around and went back to Colorado. So it was happening even back then. But it seems to growing much more frequent these days. Horrible thing.

What will it take to get these horrible, unthinkable, acts of violence to end? I mean these were just kids!

Weeping with you.
This type of horrendous scenario is becoming more and more commonplace in society. One wonders if there were no warning signs that the perpetrator was mentally unbalanced.
A tragedy of monumental proportions.

It’s tragic that it seems to be becoming the new normal. Something has got to give.
