NaBloPoMo November 2012 Prompt
Wednesday, November 28, 2012:
Tell us about the worst trip you ever took.
I can think of parts of a couple of trips I’ve taken that haven’t been so wonderful…

- Being on a bus that broke down on the highway on a stiflingly hot summer day, stranding the passengers for several hours in the middle of nowhere.
- Finally resuming travel on the same bus, everything patched together except for the air conditioning.
- Coming down with a nasty cold on the first day of a three-week camping trip with friends (particularly uncomfortable as I am not much of a camper to begin with!).
- This night not so very long ago.
…but really, for the most part, I’ve had a series of positive travel experiences throughout my life. And despite the fact that the few bad parts were incredibly unpleasant at the time, I really had to dig deep to remember them – because what’s left in my mind, really, are all the happy memories of trips taken, sights seen, and people met.
On the other hand, I have plenty of bad experiences to share when it comes to restaurant food! But that’s a story for another day.
What was the worst trip you ever took?

I was stuck in Gatwick Airport in London for about 14 hours. Alone. One can enjoy duty free shopping for so long! It was a long trip back to the states, but I survived!

Wow, that definitely sounds like an ordeal… yikes!

the camping one sounds the worst; I’m no camper and I’m a baby when it comes to colds in the first place, so I would be whining for a warm indoor bed…

I’m not a camper either – I’m not sure what possessed me to agree to go on that trip!

Personally, I hate any traveling, but that’s not the point! One particular instance comes to mind. My mother and I took a car trip that required us to stay in a small motel in … a town in East Texas that shall be nameless in order to preserve its reputation. No AC then, and it was blistering hot and the place was swarming with mosquitoes. It was too hot to sleep even under a sheet and yet you had to because otherwise the mosquitoes would have sucked out every drop of your lifeblood! But you can’t cover your face and by morning I had 11 bites on my nose alone! I looked like that Renaissance painting of the man with the lumpy nose – there’s some disease that causes that condition, but I can’t recall the name, and I can’t recall the name of the painter either, but I’m sure you’ll know which one I mean! And we got absolutely no sleep. What an awful night! It’s a wonder we didn’t come down with enchephalitis!
There was also one motel in the same general part of the world that had been invaded by crickets! They sang and jumped around all night! But at least they don’t bite!

Oh, that sounds perfectly awful – glad you survived without coming down with anything more than bites!
