Frustrated with my own inaction born of fear, and weary of spending more time talking about my dreams than actually working to make them a reality, this morning I gave my head a shake and reminded myself that in order to get where I want to go, I actually need to start taking some intentional steps in the right direction. The self-pep talk must have worked, as I finally took the time to sit down at my computer and do something I’ve been avoiding for weeks – register my business name.
And it is done!
Welcome to the world, Dawn Storey Publications.
The description of my new sole proprietorship’s business activity is, “Writing, Blogging, Web Publication” (how’s that for nice and general?!). I have no expectations of making any kind of living from this little venture (and I am not planning on quitting my day job!); however, I do believe it’s possible for me to earn some form of supplementary income from both writing and blogging; as well, I am working out a few ways in which I can channel my blogging knowledge and experience into helping others in some way. We shall see where I go from here!
I realize that registering my business name is only the first step of many, but it was a crucial one – and now that I’ve taken it, it’s possible for me to move on and get other necessary things (such as a business bank account, for instance) up and running.
And now, with this little success under my belt, I am off to enjoy the weekend.
Happy Friday, everyone! 🙂

Congratulations darling on this momentous step! I shall watch with bated breath and applaud you every step of the way.
Meanwhile, I was just going through the same trepidation and happened to be watching something on TV. I forget what show/movie it was (irrelevant at this point anyway) and the only thing I remember was the quote “if you want something to work, you have to give it your 100%”. That was good enough advice for me. Passing it on to you, in case you see some value in it 🙂

I definitely see value in it – thank you so much for sharing! I am often guilty of hoping that half-hearted efforts will get me where I want to go. Not likely!

Hmmm. Interesting. As a fellow blogger who just writes for no good reason, how do you plan to make some$$ on this venture? You might be an inspiration.

I’ll tell you what initially got me thinking, Sandra – it was a four-week “Blogging for Beginners” class I took, offered by Blogelina. Even for someone who may have been blogging for awhile (as was the case with me), she has SO many tips and tools for taking your blog to the next level, and also strategies for earning an income from your blog. The classes were very helpful and inspiring, and I highly recommend them as a starting point, even if only to help you decide whether or not you want to put in the effort it would take to make money into your blogging.
What has helped for me is defining in my own mind the difference between writing and blogging. I believe that in order to be a successful blogger, you need to be a good writer… however, just being a good writer doesn’t necessarily mean you will be a successful blogger. I’ve been trying to come to terms with this in my own head, and figuring out how I fit into the picture. It’s all still a work in progress. 🙂

Congratulations and thanks for sharing. I’m definitely interested in learning more about this. I met a young woman (23?) in Salamanca, Spain, who travel blogs FOR A LIVING! How cool does that sound!?

Oh, I love that idea! How lucky she is. I still haven’t found my “niche” (such as travel) – my niche seems to be random, rambling thoughts, which isn’t much of a niche! – but I am working on figuring out where I want to go with this.

Congrats on that important first step. I enjoy writing and blogging for writing’s sake. I prefer to make money from my photography. So far–I’ve had a pretty good year!!
Cheers, Jenn.
