Surprised into mindfulness

As I was working my way through the usual routine this morning, shaking the cobwebs from my brain and readying myself to face another day, a trick of the light turned the ordinary, for a few delightful seconds, into something extraordinary.

The morning sun shone through the bathroom window and onto the stream from the showerhead just so… and suddenly, instead of water, it was as though I was standing under a gentle glistening rain of dancing crystal beads slipping one by one off silvery strands. Suddenly, going through the motions of a daily necessity became an act of appreciating something beautiful. Suddenly, the mundane was made magical.

Usually the loveliest things don’t scream, “Notice me!” but simply happen, quietly, somewhere in between blinks and breaths.

It’s up to us to pay attention.
