I had heard of Writing Our Way Home and their January “Small Stones” tradition (if you’re not sure what it’s all about, you can read more here), but always seemed to remember or find out about it after the fact and so was never able to participate.
But this year it’s different, thanks to a post by Denise Tanton on BlogHer: Are You Setting Reading or Writing Goals in 2014? These Reading and Writing Challenges Can Help.
So I jumped in and started writing my own “Small Stones” (thanks for the reminder and inspiration, Denise!), and here’s my first selection.
Monochrome sky in soft silken grey
Filigree of black-lace branches
Plush white cape of velvet snow draped
Pan sizzles, silverware tinkles, dishes clatter
He sings silly songs and chatters at the cats
And dinner is served.
Angel’s hair, purest white
Pink-padded paws, softest touch
Love-lit eyes, sweetest heart
Two sparkling glass Mason jars,
shiny screw-top lids,
handfuls of small polished pebbles.
One cradles nurtured hope…
the other, celebrated progress.

Thanks, Cathy! I didn’t go into great detail about the challenge because I thought the link I posted did a much better job of explaining it than I could have! http://www.writingourwayhome.com/small-stones/

I found you via UBC! My mom is the writer in our family and I can’t wait to tell her about your site and about the other sites your referenced. I am a scrapbooker and always appreciate tips and suggestions on writing! Thank you for your post!

I’ve seen this page and this challenge before, and I’d love to do it. But at this point, I’m so overwhelmed by my To-do list that it would be madness to take on one more thing! Do they only do this in January, Laurel, or will there be other chances to join in?

I know exactly what you mean! I considered all my creative commitments and debated whether I should add on another one – but I’m pretty sure they only do this one in January, so I didn’t want to miss it again. But there’s always next year if you don’t have time to join in now!

That’s true – maybe I’ll just take a look, and think about doing it on my own till I can join in. That might be cool. Thanks!
