My choice for today’s Photo Friday prompt – Solitude – is a picture I took last December from the ferry deck as Peter and I traveled back to Victoria, BC for a reunion with my family over the holidays.
The crossing between Tsawwassen (on the mainland) and Swartz Bay (on Vancouver Island) takes 1 hour and 35 minutes as the ferry meanders through a passage between several smaller islands (which is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful parts of the country). Though being obligated to ride the ferry when you’re living on the Island (and want to take your car and leave) is an expensive and time-consuming pain in the neck, it’s an absolute delight when you’re on vacation!
I thought this particular photo showcased “solitude” rather nicely.

I grew up in the Mississippi Delta, spending a great deal of time in its rivers and lakes. I suppose it took a lot of that for granted. However, when I see images of Canadian waterways, I am always taken to the point of fascination. I have a theory about that, as to why, but it only makes sense to me, so I will keep it to myself.
I contend, this is my favorite “current” picture of the season. Thanks for sharing your vision here, Laurel. It has brightened an all too cool, rainy afternoon, here in West Tennessee… Myke

What a beautiful, serene photo, Laurel. The light and shadows are gorgeous. I can imagine myself staring at that view while writing in my journal. Heavenly solitude indeed!

This is absolutely stunning. Whenever I think of solitude, I think of the mountains and pine forests – this goes one step further by adding the waterway. My husband was born and raised in Vancouver BC and I just love it up there. It is one of the most beautiful places in the country. If it weren’t for all of the rain we may have moved there in retirement.

It really is beautiful… but the rain was a HUGE contributor to why we moved away!

What a gorgeous photo! Such a beautiful part of Canada. I used to go there for many summers when I was in a Reserve band in Montreal and the School of Music was in Esquimalt. I spent quite a few summers in my twenties going from Montreal to Victoria with the Reserve. Still can’t believe they paid me, too. Such great memories.

Its a wonderful picture and does well to the prompt.
And a ferry ride from one island to another sounds heavenly…Id’ like that some day, since I am cordoned to a mainland so a river/lake/sea is always welcome 🙂 Thanks!

Cool! What a small world as I travel it when I see my folks from the ‘mainland’ living North of Vancouver in North Vancouver, BC. Hope you enjoyed your trip and your time with family. It is indeed a lovely piece of this part of the world: the ferry trip and the solitude one can experience in nature, if not being in it, seeing it! Thanks for sharing Laurel. 🙂 <3
