The Photo Friday challenge today is Depth of Field, and because it’s a prompt that also came up several months ago in the Fat Mum Slim Photo A Day Challenge, I knew right away that the picture I took back then would be the one I shared here today.
I am a rank amateur when it comes to photography techniques – plus I’m using an iPhone rather than a fancy camera with all the bells and whistles – so it was definitely a challenge for me to respond to the “depth of field” prompt (especially considering that at the time I couldn’t have told you just what “depth of field” meant)! Still, I’m fairly pleased with the photo I ended up with, and appreciated the opportunity to learn something new.
You know, I enjoy being a self-taught iPhoneographer (and, truthfully, am rather intimidated by the thought of all that’s involved in using a “real” camera!), but I would really like to take a course to learn more about the technical end of photography – depth of field, lighting, composition, and so on – the sort of course that would be applicable no matter which tool you’re using to take your photos. I’ll have to add that to my bucket list!
And now, on a totally different note… today’s happiness is brought to you by the first peppermint candycane of the season. Yum!

Hi Laurel!
An Iphonotographer? Funny. I am the yearbook teacher, so I know about Depth of Field. Cool photos. Impressive.

All my pictures on my blog, the past 2 1/2 years, have been taken by an iPhone 4S. It takes wonderful pictures, and I’ve enjoyed many of yours. So much that goes into a great photo comes from the photographer, not the camera, I think, and you prove that.

I am actually really happy – and pleasantly surprised – at the quality of photos that are possible from the newer iPhones. I’m tremendously grateful to have one – it’s a much less intimidating way to learn about photography than with a “real” camera, in my opinion!

I wish I were better at taking pictures , I really don’t know much about anything . I want to try with this camera – but right now everything is dead out.

Amateur photographer? I have to disagree! The picture just looks great 🙂 And candy cane? Sigh! I have never had one :/

Why, thank you! I can’t imagine never having had a candy cane… but I’m sure you have had many more exotic foods than I have, so it all balances out! 🙂
