November plans

I find it hard to believe that it’s November already, and that we’ve been in our new home for a whole year now. Since we moved to Windsor last November it’s been a time of mostly good, some fantastic, some challenging, and most recently heartbreak as we said goodbye to our beautiful and much-beloved 20-year-old cat Spider.

Lots on which to reflect.

Now, with a new month stretching ahead, my thoughts turn to blogging goals and plans.

I thoroughly enjoyed completing the October photo a day challenge (FYI, all of my photos and posts are here, if you’d like to take a look). It was fun stretching my brain from my usual medium of words to images as I decided how to address the prompts throughout the month, and it was also a great exercise in learning (and remembering) to use the camera on my new iPhone 5.

With that in mind, I’ve decided to carry on and participate in the November photo a day challenge. I’ll share my photos daily on Instagram (username alphabetsalad), Twitter, and Flickr, and weekly here on Alphabet Salad in a “Sunday Summary” blog post.

NaBloPoMo November 2012As you may know, I’ve been participating in NaBloPoMo ever since the beginning of 2012 – and November will be no exception. (I’m hoping to be able to complete an entire year of daily blogging. I’m almost there, so I can’t quit now!)

Most of the time my writing has followed my own schedule of topics, but as November is NaBloPoMo’s birthday month I thought I’d work with the NaBloPoMo November 2012 Prompts to guide my writing each week from Monday to Friday.

So here we go…

NaBloPoMo November 2012 Prompt
Thursday, November 1, 2012:

Tell us your favourite quotation and why.

I have many favourite quotations, but one to which I return over and over is a Japanese proverb that translates to something like this:

“Fall down seven times, get up eight.”

I think the reason this quote resonates with me is because it puts the emphasis not on the falling – that is, making mistakes, or failing – but on the getting up – that is, choosing to try again, to succeed. This proverb says to me that falling, or how many times you fall, is less important than how many times you choose to get up… that as long as you get up just one more time than you fall down, you have succeeded.

What is your favourite quotation? Why?
