i opened the window
for the first time this year
(compelled by
sunshine and a powder-blue sky
laced with only the merest wisps of clouds)
and was greeted by spring’s refrain
a melodic cacophony of
birdsong and chattering squirrels
barking dogs, giddily romping in the fresh air
the soft tinkle of wind chimes
and faint echoes of a distant radio
long cloaked and muffled by winter
now swirled together and borne gently to my room
on a not-quite-warm breeze
that drew both cats, ears perked and pink noses twitching
and filled my soul with song
