L is for… Laurel
~ by Laurel Regan
cup in hand
uncapped pen poised
head tilted, expectant look
“your name?”
bright smile
ever-hopeful attitude
clear, confident voice
“Laurel”
brief flash of puzzlement
internal debate (ask or guess?)
decision made, quick scribble
“may i help the next customer, please?”
and i move to the end of the counter
to wait for my drink
and today’s name incarnation
with bated-breath anticipation
will it be
a simple misspelling
(Laural, Lorel)?
a slight twist
(Laura, Lauren, Lauriel)?
or
a complete mangleation
(Cheryl, Coral)?
always an adventure
this name game
(and don’t even get me started on
Regan or Storey!)
but i confess
(i guess)
that it’s maybe a little disappointing
(truth be told)
when they get it right
for then
there is no story.

I love it! I have a difficult name, Nathana. People often think it is a typo and call out Nathan. I have learned to answer to almost anything!

This was hilarious. When I lived in the North, it seemed no one could spell “Shonda”. If was as if it no one had ever heard the name. Living back in the South, not an issue at all. And since, Shonda Rhimes is now uber popular: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, hopefully my problem is now eliminated. Lol. At least, you get some humor out of a coffee order. 🙂

LOL, I hope so! Though it’s always good for a laugh when they get it wrong. 😉

At least you have an excuse — my name is THREE LETTERS and I STILL get asked how to spell it!
Or the blank look and then they say, “Tim?”
Do I LOOK like a Tim to you?!

I can see how they might mistake your name for Laura or perhaps even Lori or the like. I find similar with my name to as I often get Ellie (a common way to spell it) or even Eli or Ely etc. so I often spell it right off the bat. 😉 <3

Misspellings aren’t so bad. I’m always amazed when they completely change it!

Very cute little poem that made me smile, Laura er Lauren er Lora er Laurel. The only glitch I usually get with my name is spelling Cathy with a K which isn’t nearly as exciting as your story. My maiden name of Thorneycroft is another story entirely. LOL!

Oh, I loved your poem! My name is Tyrean . . . and it’s pronounced like “irene” with a “T” at the beginning. My parents wanted my name to sound that way but they didn’t want two “e” letters in it . . . hence a lifetime of confusion, but also some great stories. And then . . . well, sometimes people think it’s Terry, Tyrena, Syrene, Irene, or Teresa.
Happy A to Z!

Haha! Yes, this is familiar, most particularly with my birth surname. I was happy to leave it behind and assume hubby’s but even though this one sounds better, people still can’t spell it. You’d be amazed how many variations of “Debbie” (a really common, simple name, right?) people have come up with, too. 😛 Have a great day, “Coral”. 😉
