D is for… Diner
~ by Laurel Regan
You’re here.
sidewalk greeting:
bowl brimming with fresh water
plastic bucket stocked with crunchy biscuits
“for our four-legged friends”
step inside, look and see
cheery yellow walls the texture of scrambled eggs
tables brightly set with lime-green placemats
shining cutlery wrapped in waffle-weave dishcloth napkins
choose a seat, listen and hear
the fragrant sizzle of frying bacon
an eclectic collection of tunes that span the decades
and laughter… always laughter
sit back, take it all in
ear-to-ear smiles, freely distributed
delicious food, proudly presented
“welcome to my kitchen” emblazoned on the wall
and realize, suddenly
with the joy of contented warmth
You’re home.

Sounds nice – because my husband loves to cook we don’t eat out much. But I would feel right at home in this little cafe.

What a cozy cafe! It seems like one in which I would be quite at home; perhaps even one that I might own someday. Thanks for sharing!

Love the imagery and the feeling that this diner can be set either be at home or in a cozy diner. Sometimes when the food is good, I feel like I am eating at a restaurant but at home and home-cooked styled food at a restaurants are the best.

When I wrote it, I never thought of it applying to both a diner and home – so interesting that it has been read both ways by different people! That’s the beauty of poetry, I think – everyone gets something a little different from it.

A unique approach to the topic. The way you’re combining both Challenges just goes to show it can be done. Thanks for proving what I’ve been trying to tell some others who said they couldn’t do it.

This is such a vivid poem Laurel, I feel like “I’m there!” 😉 I kid you not but I can smell the bacon right now! It sure does feel homey: warm and cozy. 🙂 I am only participating in the A to Z challenge – my first – as I just moved and have a very busy month ahead. (I wasn’t sure how much time and energy A to Z would entail.) <3

Which cafe in the world can be more bright with the radiant love, than the home-cafe “kitchen”.
Loved it.

Nice poem! Diner reminds me of one in New Hampshire called the Tilt’n Diner, that has an actual diner as the front part of the restaurant. Instead of yellow, though, it’s pink!

Hi Laurel,
Lovely. Cozy. Comfortable.
I wasn’t sure I understood the bowl in the sidewalk image, unless it was raining….:)
Loved the bacon and the last three lines:
“and realize, suddenly
with the joy of contented warmth
You’re home.”
Nice image!

Thanks so much, Amy! My friend – the one who owns the diner – puts a bowl of water (and biscuits) out front for the dogs that walk by with their owners. It’s a lovely gesture!
