10 Outdoorsy Things to Do in Sydney, Australia

I love the great outdoors. And I’m fortunate to live in a great country that offers a variety of things to do outdoors and has pretty decent weather most of the time. If you ever decide to visit Sydney, these are the outdoorsy things I’d recommend you do.

1. Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge

The iconic Harbour Bridge is seen worldwide at the start of every New Year. Most tourists like to do the bridge climb. While this is not something I have done as yet {I find it too expensive!}, I have walked across the bridge from the city to Milson’s Point and back a fair few times. It’s a lovely walk with gorgeous views of the harbour {of course!} and the Opera House. And it can be done in less than an hour.

2. The Bondi to Coogee Walk

This is a very touristy walk and to be honest, I prefer walks with fewer people around. But back in February, I enjoyed this walk with my friend from the US because we went on a Monday and well, everyone was at work! It’s about a 10 kilometre walk on flat surface overlooking the coast and passes through Tamarama, Clovelly, and Bronte along the way. If you’re lucky, you also get to see some pretty hot surfers!

3. The Three Sisters

Visiting the Blue Mountains a couple of hours away from the city is a great thing to do. Being an avid hiker, I have been out and about in the mountains a fair bit over the last couple of years. But even if you aren’t a hardcore hiker, you can still walk from the Three Sisters to the Scenic Railway via the Grand Staircase. It’s a spectacular view and if you catch it at sunset, it’s even more special!

4. Wentworth Falls

Set in the Blue Mountains again, this is a beautiful walk not to be missed. There are a few different hiking tracks in Wentworth Falls, some easy and others not so much. There are some amazing waterfalls and rainforests set among nature and can be completed within 3 hours at a leisurely pace.

5. Visit the Royal National Park

Set in southern Sydney {close to where I live}, lies the world’s second oldest national park. It is well-known for the Coast Track of 27 kilometres from Otford to Bundeena. But not everyone has to do that walk. There are shorter hikes from Bundeena to Little Marley or even just a day picnicking at Wattamolla or surfing at Garie would suffice.

6. King Street, Newtown

Newtown is one of my favourite suburbs to visit {apart from where I live}. It’s funky, quirky, has great stores, food, and interesting people. It’s hard to get bored in Newtown whether you visit it during the day or at night. It’s so full of life that it’d be a shame to miss it.

7. Kurnell to Cronulla

Captain Cook’s landing place was Kurnell and there is a beautiful 4 hour leisurely walk from Kurnell to Cronulla along the coast. It involves a bit of rock hopping if you are game and walking along the sand at Cronulla. Kurnell is a great spot for a picnic and a relaxing way to spend summer afternoons while Cronulla just happens to be my favourite {and local} beach!

8. The Rocks

In the heart of the city, near the harbour is the area known as The Rocks. It has a few alleyways, coffee shops, cafés and restaurants all within walking distance of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera house. The Rocks is also famous for its markets that take place every weekend.

9. The Spit to Manly

Manly is part of the northern beaches of Sydney and while the beach itself isn’t one of my favourites, I have enjoyed a 10 kilometre walk from The Spit bridge to Manly beach. Once again, like most walks I love, this one has fantastic coastal views and additionally, those of the city skyline.

10. Cronulla

This is me being totally biased but I love Cronulla. The mall, the beach, the walk along the esplanade, the coffee shops, the markets that take place every second Sunday – it’s all worth a visit. I am a Shire local and have been the past 5 years. It’s a beautiful place and I am so very fortunate to call this home!

Sydney is such a huge place that I know there is a lot more for me to explore outdoors. I haven’t even covered half of it! If you ever decide to visit, give me a shout out – maybe we can explore together!
