Feathering our nest

Speaking charitably, one might say that the style of our living room is rather eclectic. Really, though, with its antique Morris chair, mid-century modern Danish teak loveseat, large overstuffed recliner, and haphazard collection of stools and side tables, the blunt truth of the matter is that it would be better described as a mix-and-match (with an emphasis on the mixing rather than the matching), hand-me-down style reminiscent of the “Early College Student” era.

Just a little random.

It wasn’t always like that, I promise! But if you’ve ever dealt with the cost of moving your possessions a great distance, you’ll probably understand why we chose to leave our most heavy furnishings back in Victoria and only bring with us the pieces that were relatively light (or, in some cases, irreplaceable).

Now that we’ve been in our new home for almost a year, though, my husband and I (both well past college age!) are tired of feeling as though we still haven’t settled in properly, and so decided to get on with replacing some of the furniture we discarded. A friend had suggested that we check out the Bargain Annex at Tepperman’s, so that’s where we headed first.

Now let me tell you right off that I am no interior designer. I know what I don’t like, but that’s about the extent of my furniture shopping prowess. And my husband’s taste in living room furniture tends toward the most colossal, bulky, bells-and-whistles, mancave-style sectionals he can find, which really doesn’t help in the slightest. On top of all that, our living room is fairly small and it seems as though all the couches out there these days are enormous.

It’s all rather overwhelming, really.

Unbelievably, though, we ended up finding something that suited both our taste (or lack thereof!), size restrictions, and budget. Actually, two somethings – for the price I figured we’d have to spend on a couch alone, we were able to get a couch and a loveseat! Both pieces are comfortable and a decent size, yet not so bulky that they’ll take over the room. I couldn’t find a picture on the Tepperman’s site, but did track one down elsewhere if you’d like to take a look at what we chose:

Couch and loveseat

Nothing fancy, but it’ll do the trick.

While we were there we decided to have a quick look at nightstands. We have a lovely bed in our attic room (the one in this picture), but have been making do with large cardboard boxes as nightstands (I know, attractive!). We found a pair of nightstands that I’m pretty sure will work with our bed, for a great price, so we purchased them as well.

While in a whole lot of ways I would far rather spend my money on gadgets (I have very good taste when it comes to gadgets!), I must admit that it’s been rather fun feathering our nest! I’m looking forward to the arrival of our new pieces.

Maybe now we’ll even be inspired to hang some more pictures!
