Inspired by NaBloPoMo writing prompt for Wednesday, March 12, 2014:
Do you feel like you reveal too much of yourself on your blog? Do you think you hold back too much?

I may reveal too much – but I made that decision intentionally, after I had been blogging for about 2 1/2 years. A major flood hit my area and suddenly I was in the middle of a developing saga – either I revealed where I lived, or not. I decided to reveal, and have never looked back. (My name doesn’t appear on my blog, but it does in comments and in the several blogging challenges I participate in.)

This quote just spoke to me and I thought it fit in well with the question. I need to explore the question more myself, I think!

What a statement. After years of being silent and sharing almost nothing, trying to hide and not put myself in a vulnerable position ——–I published my memoir. Now my life was out there — an open book, literally. I an learning that not sharing is actually selfish and gradually opening up on my blog to give people the opportunity to advise, share and relate. On the other hand, I tend to stay clear of those who wear everything on their sleeves and reveal more than necessary, especially if they are playing the martyr card. Balance is key.

So very well spoken, Carol – thank you. I’m glad you reached the point where you were able to share your story with others – I’m sure many will benefit from hearing it, and that’s what builds community!

By it’s very nature, personal blogging is sharing, sometimes too much. As long as I don’t hurt or embarrass anyone else, I’m ok with my level of honesty.

I strive to keep a balance of just enough personal to build trust and honesty but not so much that it looks like I’m spewing! Tough balance. I used to have an anonymous blog and there I was much less restrained!
There are things I don’t talk about–my kids, the ex and other family..not that I don’t want to sometimes!!!

I think you’re right – there definitely has to be a balance between openness and oversharing. It can be tough sometimes, indeed!

I strive to be honest and forthright in all that I do. I feel vulnerable sometimes when I write. I write and edit and edit and edit. Then I hit publish.
I reveal no secrets, and I try not to hurt others.
Blogging is a tricky tray of knowing how much you can write about. This, Laurel, is a great question!

I used to be pretty tight with personal information. Most of the people who read my blog (LiveJournal at the time) were friends that I knew anyway. Then I created a second blog where I could be more open about one particular aspect of my life. Now I have a third blog where I write about writing, but even on that one, I’ve been more open than not, especially recently. So I’ve done both: I’ve held everything back, and been (probably) a little too open.

I started on LJ as well, and for the most part my posts were available to friends only – so there were definitely things I was more comfortable sharing in a private vs. a totally public blog. Interesting to have had both experiences!
