I still have the two Berlitz Pocket Guides for Europe and the Greek Islands, bought at age 19 when working retail and dreaming I didn’t. I would sit on a wooden bench in the mall during lunch breaks, enraptured by the sturdy little volumes full of promise – pictures and facts and vacation tips – believing that some day they would go with me on the vacation of my dreams.
That was back in 1986. The now sadly out of date guides have moved with me seven times within the same city.
Unfortunately, we still haven’t made it to Europe.

2014 update:
Add one more move to the original piece of writing, this time to a new city across the country. Perhaps we’re getting closer…

Maybe you should jettison the old guides & buy new ones as a good luck charm?

I agree with Carol. Out with the old. In with the new. And new goals and dreams with them!

I still have my Learn Italian tapes in my office. They too have moved with me 4 times. I no longer own a tape player. And yet I hang on to them. Six weeks ago I purchased the first installment of Rosetta Stone’s French lesson. It is still sitting on the shelf unopened. Damn. Thinking that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Good to know I’m not alone!

I liked the reminder here to keep track of how you came to dream about something, whether it’s happened yet or not.

I just recently found some old articles that I saved for 30+ years when my plans were to travel to Ireland and Poland to learn of my heritage. I threw them away but the dream of going is still alive. Thanks for sharing
